The Egg in Beijing

National Centre for the Performance Arts is also knows as The Egg

Designed by French architect Paul Andreu the National Centre for the Performance Arts (NCPA) in Beijing is also locally knows at the Egg. The titanium-glass dome exterior looks like an egg floating on water, or a water drop, and is completely surrounded by a man-made lake. The dome measures 212 meters in east–west direction, 144 meters in north–south direction, and is 46 meters high. At the north side, underneath the lake, is the main entrance. In the centre of the titanium shell is a glass curtain in north–south direction that gradually widens from top to bottom. Once inside, the dome the Egg houses three separated performance venues; The Opera House, the Concert Hall and the Theatre. The Egg is to the west of Tiananmen Square near the Forbidden City.

The Egg is entirely surrounded by a man-made lake.The Egg exterior is covered with 18,000 titanium plates.
